Franz Alt studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Leopold Kupelwieser and Josef Danhauser.

From 1844 he worked as an independent artist. Franz Alt undertook study trips to Tyrol and northern Italy, also visited Moscow, St. Petersburg, Paris and London.

Franz Alt was known mainly as a Veduta painter. He was friends with Count Kázmér Miklós Esterházy de Galántha (1805-1870) and with Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach. Alt altogether created about two thousand watercolors and oil paintings.
